Chiều hôm đó, mẹ dặn em ở nhà ngoan, không được nghịch diêm và bật lửa vì rất nguy hiểm. Mẹ còn cẩn thận cất hết diêm và bật lửa lên chỗ cao. Mẹ đi chợ mua đồ ăn cho cả nhà. Em ở nhà một mình, lúc đầu còn chơi đồ chơi ngoan ngoãn. Nhưng một lúc sau, em bắt đầu cảm thấy tò mò về ngọn lửa. Em nhớ lại hình ảnh ngọn lửa màu đỏ rực rỡ mà em đã từng nhìn thấy khi đi cắm trại cùng gia đình.

Sự tò mò thôi thúc em tìm kiếm diêm và bật lửa. Em lén lấy ghế, trèo lên chỗ tủ bếp cao nhất, nơi mẹ thường cất đồ. Cuối cùng, em cũng tìm thấy hộp diêm và chiếc bật lửa màu đỏ. Tim em đập thình thịch vì vừa hồi hộp, vừa sợ hãi. Em run run mở hộp diêm, lấy một que diêm và quẹt vào vỏ hộp. "Xẹt…", một ngọn lửa nhỏ bé bùng lên. Em vô cùng thích thú nhìn ngọn lửa nhảy múa. Em tiếp tục quẹt hết que diêm này đến que diêm khác.

Rồi em nghịch ngợm hơn, em lấy một tờ giấy báo, đốt thử xem sao. Tờ báo nhanh chóng bùng cháy, ngọn lửa lan ra rất nhanh. Em hoảng sợ khi thấy lửa cháy to hơn mình tưởng. Khói đen kịt bốc lên, mùi khét lẹt lan tỏa khắp nhà. Em vội vàng thổi phù phù vào ngọn lửa nhưng lửa vẫn không tắt mà còn cháy to hơn. Em hốt hoảng chạy đi tìm nước để dập lửa.

May mắn thay, đúng lúc đó mẹ về đến nhà. Mẹ hốt hoảng khi thấy khói bốc ra
